Foxconn Responds to Workers Suicide Threat

Around 150 Chinese workers at Foxconn, the world’s largest electronics manufacturer, threatened to commit suicide yesterday by leaping from their factory roof in protest at their working conditions, the Telegraph reported. The company has been accused of forcing workers to endure long hours under stressful conditions with no over-time pay or adequate compensation. It is not unusual for workers to work thirty-four hours straight or to die from exhaustion.

Today the company had resolved a pay dispute with scores of workers at one of its factories in central China. Details of the agreement were not released. One of the workers said they had been promised additional compensation, according to the New York Times.

Mike Daisey’s one man show The Ecstasy and Agony of Steve Jobs talks about his experience at a Foxconn factory in China. The hour-long podcast on This American Life is worth a listen.
